Southern Company’s leadership in carbon capture research and development continued last month with the addition of two new members to the International Test Center Network (ITCN), a leading global carbon capture coalition chaired and operated by the National Carbon Capture Center.
Formed in 2012, the ITCN facilitates knowledge sharing among carbon-capture test facilities around the world. Including its newest members – the Energy & Environment Research Center, in Grand Forks, North Dakota, and the University of Kentucky – the network now totals a dozen technology leaders. Negotiations are also underway for organizations from Japan and Spain to join the ITCN.
“The growth of the ITCN is exciting because it demonstrates the continued international commitment to developing next-generation carbon capture technologies,” said Frank Morton, National Carbon Capture Center technology development manager. “By leading the ITCN and leveraging the knowledge of its members, Southern Company and the National Carbon Capture Center are helping to advance international solutions to reduce carbon emissions.”
Southern Company leaders welcomed the new members during a meeting in conjunction with the 13th Conference on Greenhouse Gas Control Technologies (GHGT-13), a strategically important conference for international scientific research on greenhouse gas mitigation technologies, held in Lausanne, Switzerland.
From its location in Wilsonville, Alabama, the National Carbon Capture Center – which Southern Company manages and operates for the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) – works with scientists and technology developers from government, industry and universities to evaluate, demonstrate and advance emerging carbon-capture technologies.
